Background of the Study: Dehydration is one of the most common and dangerous complications of diarrhea, which is a prevalent condition in many parts of the world, including Nigeria (Ahmed et al., 2024). Diarrheal diseases, often caused by infections such as rotavirus, cholera, and bacterial pathogens, can lead to significant fluid loss, resulting in dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, and even death if not promptly addressed (Mustapha et al., 2023). According to the World Health Organization (WHO), diarrhea remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality, particularly in children under five and vulnerable populations such as the elderly and those with weakened immune systems (WHO, 2023).
Nurses play a pivotal role in managing dehydration by assessing hydration levels, administering fluids, and educating patients and families about proper hydration (Ibrahim et al., 2023). However, there are challenges in resource-limited settings like Sokoto State, where healthcare facilities may face constraints in terms of staff, infrastructure, and medical supplies (Musa et al., 2024). This study aims to assess the impact of nurses’ roles in the management of dehydration among patients with diarrhea in Sokoto State hospitals, evaluating their interventions and their effectiveness in improving patient outcomes.
Statement of the Problem: Dehydration due to diarrhea is a common problem in Sokoto State hospitals, where a high number of patients experience this condition, particularly in the rural areas. Despite the critical role of nurses in preventing dehydration, there is insufficient research on the effectiveness of their interventions and practices in managing dehydration in these patients. This study seeks to explore the impact of nurses’ roles in managing dehydration among diarrhea patients, identifying both successful practices and areas requiring improvement.

Scope and Limitations of the Study: This study will focus on hospitals in Sokoto State, particularly examining the role of nurses in the management of dehydration among patients with diarrhea. Data will be collected through interviews with nurses, patient records, and observations. Limitations may include the availability of resources to carry out a comprehensive study, as well as potential biases in self-reported practices.
